A plea from the fire service

By JordanBrowzer 13 Jan 2020

When was the last time you thought about fire safety?

South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue had multiple calls from student halls in Sheffield in the weeks and months running up to Christmas.

Most of these calls have been false alarms, and others have been preventable incidents, but not all of them require a response, which is at least two fire engines from central fire station.

Whilst firefighters are always on hand to help in a genuine emergency, and residents can call 999 when needed, the service wants to reduce these unnecessary call-outs and false alarms which tie up important resources.

Students are kindly reminded to take on board the following pieces of advice:

  • Be careful when cooking and don't let yourself get distracted from the oven
  • Shut the bathroom door - steam from the shower sets off the fire alarm system
  • Only activate the fire alarm in a genuine emergency
  • Don't cook drunk - get a takeaway! Check out our 'Takeaways can save lives' article here.
