Moving On: Life After Halls
Are you already thinking about your options after your lease comes to an end in your halls next year? We've compiled some useful info below to help you come to that all important decision.
Purpose Built Student Accommodation
In addition to the accommodation available to book through RGU, there are several private companies who operate purpose built student accommodation throughout the city.
- Hello Student
- Homes for Students
- Prestige Student Living
- Liberty Living
- Student Roost
Handy Tip: Check the length of your lease, as some providers require you to sign up for a 12 month lease that is legally binding and could result in you paying for accommodation when you don’t need it. Also note that if you withdraw from your course for any reason, you would normally still be liable to pay rent for the full duration of your lease.
Purpose Built Student Accommodation might be your thing if you loved staying in halls, however if you're looking to have a different living experience, Private Rented Accommodation might be worth looking into.
Private Rented Accommodation
There is a large private rented sector in Aberdeen which has become more flexible and affordable in recent years.
Within the private rented sector, you have options to look for a room in shared accommodation (sometimes with a resident landlord) or rent a whole flat either by yourself or with a group of friends.
Whilst the majority of landlords and agents operate in accordance with legislation and good practice, you should take extra care to ensure you aren’t affected by rogue landlords, scams or illegal practices. We would strongly recommend that you do your research on Scottish Tenancy Law before you sign any leases or hand over any money and if in doubt, contact the Reslife Advisor who will be able to help!
Handy Tip: When searching for Private Rented Accommodation, remember that unlike Student Accommodation, most of the time bills are not included in the price of the rent so you will need to factor in for utility bills like electricity, gas and WiFi when considering your monthly budget.
We know that choosing where to live when you're a student is a big decision so take your time and don't rush into anything. No matter where you decide to live, you will be signing a legally binding contract so its important you make sure you are happy with your choice!
