Eilidh's Blog: QMU Musical Theatre Society presents - Bare: A Pop Opera

By Megan 22 Mar 2019

In May, QMU Musical Theatre Society will showcase all their hard work in their annual end of year show. This year, the society will be staging a production of Bare: A Pop Opera. Despite being a lesser known musical, the show is one that is bound to make the audience laugh and cry- and then cry some more- with its tragic story, striking choreography and moving score.

The show tells the story of Peter and Jason, two roommates at a Catholic boarding school who have fallen madly in love with one another, and displays the often very real struggle people in the LGBTQ community can face when their sexual orientation seems to conflict with their religion. Through Peter, Jason, and the other characters in the show, the audience are shown an emotional depiction of the issues young people can often face in a situation which neglects to teach them how to deal with their problems in an unbiased way.

The society have been working tirelessly since January to produce what is shaping up to be a spectacular performance. As is customary, the production team and performers alike have been eating, sleeping and breathing Bare, and are looking forward to showing off their months of hard work. With the show being a sung-through musical, it is a particular challenge for the performers to learn such a large amount of complex songs, which they have taken in their stride. Despite the rehearsal process being hard going, the members of the society never fail to enjoy themselves and keep the rehearsals fun, as can be seen on the group’s social media accounts which keep everyone up to date on what the society are getting up to.

You can follow the Musical Theatre Society’s Instagram and their Facebook page.

In addition to rehearsals, the society also hosts several karaoke nights throughout the year as well as taking part in other fundraisers. Look out for details of up and coming karaoke nights on their social media!

The performance of Bare: A Pop Opera will take place on the 1st and 2nd of May at 7:30pm in the Brunton Theatre, Musselburgh. Tickets cost £10 (£8 concession) and can be purchased through a member of the society, or using this link.

Come along to support the society and experience a night of fantastic performance and all-round great entertainment!
