In 1993, a group of students got together and threw a bunch of raves...
SHOCK, HORROR?! Ok, probably not...until you learn that they did it to raise money because they wanted to see more trees and green spaces in cities!
From this group's efforts was born a new charity, Trees for Cities. And now, 24 years later they are still planting urban trees and have grown to become the only charity working on an international scale to create greener cities.
Why are they doing it?
Because as 80% of us now live in cities, our urban green spaces are facing more and more threats.
From climate change to disease, to development plans, countries are at risk of losing more and more natural space at a time when it is most needed, to fight against problems like air pollution, obesity and psychological wellbeing.
So, what's the aim?
Trees for cities are on a mission to plant more trees and green-up cities worldwide, and they need OUR help.
Their focus is on areas where the social and environmental impact on local people is greatest, and they work to transform communities and make them happier and healthier places to live.
What's more, they strengthen communities through their volunteering opportunities!
What can I do?
24 years later, Trees for Cities have gone back to their roots - back to students! Yes, Fresh Student Living have teamed up with them to fundraise across the UK and plant more trees to continue to improve urban green spaces!
It's a great opportunity for students to make a difference to the environment and leave a lasting legacy of trees!
