Looking back on my final year

By ResLifeAshleigh 22 Mar 2019

Hi! I'm Maria, a final year student and currently the Team Leader of the Residential Advisors at Daisy Bank halls of residence.

I have to admit, final year is as stressful as everybody says. But for me, it has been one of the best ones yet. If you are reading this and are finding it a bit difficult, please don’t give up – you never know what is around the corner!

Here is a brief overview of my year so far:

It’s happening… I am writing a dissertation this year.

I don’t think I am prepared for the stress, but I am ready to bring my vision to life. I am really interested in the topic (thankfully) so hopefully the hard work will all be worth it!

Besides the dissertation, my course allows us to be a bit more creative and participate in group work, which is much more fun! However, I’m sure you will all agree that group work can be... interesting.

Part of my course this year has given my group the opportunity to create 4NTWRKS MCR - a social media and marketing communications agency. We have secured a client and post regularly on our blog and social media so please check us out!

Alongside my course, I am a Residential Advisor at Daisy Bank halls of residence and this year I was offered the position as Team Leader. Residential Advisors visit and support students in halls of residence and run events to enhance their student experience. It is one of the most rewarding jobs and provides us with many transferable skills for future work.

Top tip: Make sure you have excellent time-management and organisation skills. If you have a part-time (or full time!!) job alongside a degree, I take my hat off to you, it is tough! But all so worth it.

Whether you live in halls or commute to University, I couldn’t recommend joining a society or sports team enough. Joining a club really does feel like a family. I am part of the Hockey Team and Christian Union, both of which have made me feel more confident and outgoing. Looking back, I wish I joined earlier! If you’re looking for that bit of a push, here it is:

Overall, University can be the best thing, but I really believe it is what you make of it. It is so important to knuckle down and try your best in assignments, but it is equally as important to immerse yourself in everything outside of academic life.
