Advice to my first year self
When you look back, you always think of things you should have, could have, and would have done.
While this isn’t always healthy, sometimes a bit of reflection can be good. So, if I had the chance, what would I have said to my first year self?
I already knew how to save up money and budget my living costs, but that was when I was getting a monthly wage. When you get all your money for the term in one go, you feel like you have a lot of money and that it is going to last forever. I found out the hard way ... it doesn't.
Get more organised
Being at uni is a bit of a paradox. Time goes by really quickly but really slowly at the same time. Deadlines creep up on you. One moment you have 4 weeks left before it’s due and the next you’ve got 4 days.
My first few months at university was weird. I was in uni 4 days a week but for about 3 hours each day. It made me a bit confused about what to do with all the spare time I had. I wish that I had known to work on my deadlines gradually rather than trying to do huge blocks nearer the deadline. It would have made me feel less stressed and more organised.
Revisit your notes
Keep revisiting your notes so that they stay fresh in your mind. When it was time to revise I struggled to use my notes because I hadn't formatted them properly or understood what I was writing.
Friends will come
It might take a while to make friends but that’s okay. You’ll find people you really click with and people you don’t – and that's okay too. You don’t have to be friends with everyone.
Look after yourself
And finally ... do things you like. Try and get some rest. Eat healthy. Stop stressing out over silly things that you can't change and learn from the mistakes that you will make.
