#InYourCorner: Helping your mate's mental health
Mental health is a huge problem for university students and men are no different...
Have you read 'men and mental health' before? Our blogger Tom talks about his experience with mental health and with 1 in 4 of us fighting a mental health problem in our lifetime, it's something that we need to talk about more.
After doing some research, Time to Change found that compared to women:
- men have more negative attitudes towards mental health
- men are less knowledgeable about mental health
- men are less likely to discuss their mental health with a professional
- men are three times more likely to take their own life
And that's why it's incredibly important that men are talking about their mental health and their feelings. Time to Change's #inyourcornercampaign is all about ending mental health discrimination and the stigma that surrounds men admitting that they're struggling.
How can I help my friend?
Being in someones 'corner' doesn't even require much but it'll help more than you realise. If you've noticed that they're a bit quieter than usual or distant, reach out to them and let them know that you're there.
It could be in the easiest but most effective ways like asking them to go for a kickabout, go into town together or text them/tag them in memes to put a smile on their face.
But there is one thing you need to understand. If they're suffering from mental health, they may not be able to switch to happy and they may not want to come out but it's important that you still try to help them.
The fact that suicide is the biggest cause of death in men under 45 shows that this is something we all need to talk about more and more. If you know someone suffering, reach out to them.
If you're suffering yourself, don't suffer in silence. There are lots of places that can get help and support:
- CALM: Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) is a movement dedicated to helping men who have suicidal thoughts. You can call their helpline on 0800 585858 or use their webchat.
- Nightline: is a confidential listening, support and practical information service open at night and run by students for students.
- Samaritans Helpline: is for those who are experiencing high levels of distress. Contact this 24-hour helpline on 08457 909090 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
