Staying in FRESH over Christmas?
Watching those around you packing up and getting picked up, an Instagram timeline full of people with their family, or having an off-day can all contribute to that homesick feeling, but it doesn't have to meal it'll spoil your holidays!
Here are our 10 top tips to beating homesickness over the festive period:
- Schedule calls home
With Viber, Facetime, WeChat and Skype all free via wifi, there's no excuse to not keep in touch with your family and home friends...
- Get your work done!
January exams looming or got coursework deadlines? Now's the time for it! Being productive is a great way to take your mind off negative thoughts. Plus, you can guarantee your friends will have envy when they get back and have barely started theirs!
- Get out
Whether it's to the library, shopping for a new winter coat or just exploring somewhere new. Sometimes all you need is a breath of fresh air and a bustle of people to make you feel better.
- Watch films
Nothing warms the heart and keeps your mind occupied more than classic festive films. What's your favourite? You can't beat Home Alone!
If the weather isn't getting you in the mood for that jog then grab your bobble hat and go for a walk instead. The happy hormones released through exercise are a sure fire way to perk you up!
- Lose yourself
You know that book you've been saying you're going to read since January? Now's the perfect time to get lost in it! Or, if you're not a fan of reading, a few puzzle books can help. Even download an app if you don't fancy being old school!
- You can't beat mum's cooking...
Or can you? By learning some of your mum's hearty home recipes you can help bridge the distance and make yourself feel at home. You can challenge her cooking when you next go home too!
The good thing about uni is that you make friends from all over the country. So, use this as an excuse to go and see them in their hometowns and explore different places in the UK you haven't seen yet.
- Embrace the traditions
Why not head to a Christmas market to keep up with the festive traditions? Mulled wine, churros and chocolate and a bratwurst speak happiness on so many levels.
Get involved in local activities and help those who need it most. It'll keep you busy and make your homesickness a thing of the past. You'll probably make a few friends and might even find yourself a new hobby!
Do you know other people who've stayed around too? Even if you don't know them that well, invite them along with you!
