BLOG: A Chinese student's guide to a British life
There are many things I have learned from my own experiences in the UK as an international student...
The majority of international students choose to study in the UK to successfully complete a degree but also to experience (and understand) British culture and make local friends.
Here are some things you could try to really experience the British way of life:
- Try different food
Trying traditional British food is a perfect chance for you to understand a new place and its culture. Be sure to try these classic British meals: full English breakfast, bangers and mash, beef Wellington, cottage pie, fish & chips, a pasty, pie & mash, and Sunday roast.
- Have afternoon tea
It's well known that British people love tea, so having traditional afternoon tea is a good way to know more about British culture. Some highly recommended places to try afternoon tea include: Fortnum and Mason, Patisserie Valerie, Betty’s Cafe Tea Rooms and Sally Lunn’s House.
- Go to a local market
Local markets are everywhere throughout the UK which provides a chance to experience the unique British way of life. Different markets have their own styles and attractions. For example, if you go to London, you must visit: Covent Garden, Camden Town, Portobello Market, Brick Lane Market and Spitalfields Market.
- Get involved in a public event
There are a variety of public events in the UK, such as Gay Pride, the Colour Run, summer music festivals and other colourful festival activities. Don’t hesitate to get involved in a special event, just have fun and enjoy it!
- Watch football
Football is considered an important symbol of British culture. If you're a football fan, why not go to watch a game in a stadium? There are lots of choices waiting for you. For example: the famous England team and Manchester United
When in doubt, there are always fun events put on in Fresh's accommodation that you can get involved in and meet British and/or other international students just like you...
Now it's time for you to start your adventure in the UK!
