5 big foodie trends of 2019
On a scale of 1-10, how much of a foodie are you?
2018 was a pretty big year with trends such as plant-based diets and healthier alternatives, and 2019 is expected to bring even bigger and better things!
If you're the type of student who likes to go out and be the first to try new restaurants then make note of the latest trends to look out for. Maybe you prefer cooking for yourself and by trying out some new ingredients/cuisines this year, you'll be broadening your horizons even further.
Here are just some of the big foodie trends to expect in 2019:
1. Afro-Caribbean food
This isn't something that's brand new but it is something that's likely to become much more popular and well-known in 2019. You may have had African or Caribbean street food before but you can now expect to see it popping up on more restaurants menus too. Dishes like jollof rice and jerk chicken might sound familiar but expect lots more!
2. Fake meat
Unless you were living under a rock last year, you will have noticed a huge rise in veganism and people switching to a vegan lifestyle. Seeing as a lot of vegans were previously meat eaters, we can expect to see an increase in faux meat. Some supermarkets stock these products already, so you can prepare this 'meat' at home or try to find a restaurant/outlet offering something similar near you.
3. 'Reducing your carbon footprint'
With programmes like Blue Planet II shocking us into how much our waste is affecting animals, we're all much more aware of the effect we are having on the wider world. As a result, you can expect to see more vegetable dishes without any meat/fish/protein. Restaurants are using up waste ingredients much more too, instead of throwing them away - so, expect to see random combinations! Packaging will be a lot 'greener' also.
4. Healthy fats
Move over avocado, there's a new (and even better) selection of healthy fats in town! These are ones to try at home - things like coconut butter and ghee are likely to appear in more and more supermarkets so pick some up yourself and give them a try. Making smaller changes to your diet every now and again will make you feel great too.
5. Mocktails 2019 style
As more and more students are turning away alcohol, this couldn't come at a better time. If a lot of your friends drink alcohol and you want to feel 'part of the crowd' then look out for alcohol-free 'spirits'. Ingredients like Kombucha are likely to be mixers and chickpea water, Aquafaba, may be used to create the foam to really bring the drink together. Being sober has never been so good!
Keep your eye out for these in the next year - it's time to get adventurous and try new things!
